The Co-operative Education department recently nominated two Sheridan students for Co-op Student of the Year awards to both the provincial association, Education at Work Ontario (EWO)  and the national Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE). Students are considered on the basis of their academic achievement, employer contributions, community involvement and their success in co-op.

I am thrilled to announce that for the second year in a row a Sheridan student has been selected as CAFCE’s College Co-op Student of the Year.  Kristen Metz is in the Software Development program and is quite extraordinary.  She is an outstanding student (3.99 GPA), highly recognized by her employers, and has overcome the significant challenge of having lost her sight several years ago.  Kristen completed a work-term at Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) where she worked in the web development area. The new employee web tools she designed and implemented resulted in increased productivity by IESO staff and are used to this day. In the community, Kristen is a member of KNOW IT (knowledge Network of Women in IT), Lime Connect Canada and has volunteered for the Animal Hospital of Lakeport and the Women’s Shelter of Adrian. Kristen also assists with fundraisers for the Lion’s Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.  Her spirit is indomitable and she is so deserving of this honour.  Another Sheridan student, Hargurdeep Singh has been given honourable mention by CAFCE.

EWO has selected Hargurdeep Singh as their Co-op Student of the Year.  Hargurdeep is well known and well regarded within Sheridan.  As a second year Mechanical Engineering Technology student (Design and Drafting) Hargurdeep took on 3D printing technologies and used his knowledge to create assistive devices for students with disabilities.  Hargurdeep’s accomplishments are numerous including founding and leading the Sheridan Engineering Association, he is the Student Chair of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Sheridan College Chapter, Student Project Coordinator of the Tetra’s Youth in Transition Project and Student Ambassador for the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering & Technology.

Please join us on Friday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the President’s Boardroom at Trafalgar for the presentations of the awards to these remarkable students.
