I’m pleased to announce the appointment of David Dexter as Associate Director of Sheridan’s Screen Industries Research and Training Centre. David will continue to report directly to John Helliker, Dean, Innovation and Engagement.  In his new role, David will take on increased responsibility for strategic leadership and direction of SIRT’s research activities and partnerships to ensure they drive compelling value to students, exceptional growth opportunities for faculty, and substantive economic and social benefits to industry and the community. David will continue to have responsibility for operational management of SIRT as in his former position as Senior Manager, SIRT Operations and Business Development.

SIRT is one of five research centres created in areas of strategic importance to the college that help to raise Sheridan’s profile as a globally recognized research and innovation hub. Originally established in 2010 to support applied research in the areas of digital cinema and virtual production for film, television and gaming, SIRT has over the last two years significantly enhanced its innovation support activities to meet the growing demand for research and development of virtual and augmented reality technologies and applications.  In the last year alone it has supported over 25 companies in the virtual reality area, establishing itself as a leading innovation support centre for research and development into immersive technologies and content development.  Last year also saw the commercialization of SirtNet, a four-year research project involving fifteen companies that provides film and television sector production and postproduction companies with a unique remote collaboration platform. David played a key role in both these achievements.

Please join me in congratulating David on his appointment. I wish him every success in further enhancing Sheridan’s reputation for excellence in research and development of screen-based technologies and applications.

Dr. Marc Richard, Coordinator of Sheridan’s Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance program, has been named one of ten new Fellows welcomed into the 3M National Teaching Fellowship by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE).  He is the first college professor to be accorded this honour; all other Fellows to date have been affiliated with universities.

Founded in 1986 by STLHE in partnership with 3M Canada, the National Teaching Fellowship recognizes exceptional contributions to teaching and learning in Canadian postsecondary education.  The community of 3M National Teaching Fellows embodies the highest ideals of teaching excellence and scholarship with a commitment to encourage and support the educational experience of every learner.  It is also the only pan-Canadian, cross-disciplinary recognition of educational leadership and excellence in postsecondary teaching.

Dr. Richard has been teaching for over 25 years, and began in the field as a kindergarten teacher.  He first came to Sheridan as a director and choreographer in 2001.  “My philosophy of educational leadership begins with an image of the student as rich with ideas and creative potential,” says Richard.  “My passion for teaching is all about helping students discover something for themselves so that they own it,” he adds. “We can’t give knowledge to them—we have to let them discover things for themselves.”

Dr. Richard joins a community of over 320 3M National Teaching Fellows, representing a broad range of academic disciplines from more than 80 small and large Canadian postsecondary institutions.  Fellows are granted a lifetime membership in STLHE, and the opportunity to participate with other Fellows in a four-day study retreat at the Chateau Montebello in Quebec, held in November.

Wishing James Sayers a Happy Retirement

Happy retirement

James Sayers is retiring from Sheridan this week after a remarkable career of teaching in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. Jim is synonymous with Computer Animation, leading the program from its inception to its current status as the hallmark of animation education. He built a team of colleagues who worked collaboratively and seamlessly, expanding the program to include two other post graduate certificates, Visual Effects and Character Animation (now Creature Animation). He was also a key contributor to the design and development of the Bachelor of Animation program. His colleague describe him as a gentle, thoughtful and professional individual with a heart of gold.

The hundreds of students whom he taught over the past 30 years echo these sentiments: he is the best teacher ever, a true mentor and an inspiring life-long learner. Words, however, cannot capture the profound impact Jim has made to the college, the program, the animation industry and all of the people who had the good fortune to know him during his tenure.

Good luck Jim in your retirement!
We wish you all the best in this next chapter.
