Throughout Sheridan’s recent strategic planning process, the primacy of equity, diversity and inclusion to members of our community was clearly articulated. It followed then, that this was codified as one of the five overarching enablers that must run across everything we do.  Specifically, our Plan committed every member of our learning community to actively embed inclusion and equity into their spheres of influence. Together, we agreed to create a community where everyone is bringing their full potential and experiences, knowing their unique contributions are valued.

Key elements of this enabler include:

  • Leveraging the diversity of our Sheridan community to unleash the potential of everyone within our organization;
  • Tapping the diversity of our local communities to enrich our campuses;
  • Advancing the development of intercultural competencies in the context of teaching and learning dos support internationalization, inclusion and equity;
  • Facilitating an equitable learner-centric experience for all students with special attention to international, first generation and students with disabilities;
  • Creating policies, processes and spaces guided by universal design principles so they are understood, accessed and used to the greatest extent possible;  integrating the values, principles and priorities of the Centre for Indigenous Learning and Support into all work across Sheridan;  and,
  • Purposefully strengthening holistic internationalization.

To underscore the importance of this work and ensure these interventions are effectively and efficiently advanced, I am proud to announce that Dr. Jane Ngobia’s new title will be Vice President, Inclusive Communities.

Many of you will have had an opportunity to meet Jane since she started at Sheridan in January 2019.  She came to Sheridan from the University of Guelph, where she served as the Assistant Vice President, Diversity & Human Rights;  before that, she oversaw the equity and inclusion portfolio at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and the OCAD University.  In addition to her substantive administrative portfolios, Jane has also served as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences at OCADU, a lecturer at Centennial College and a Dean, Deputy Dean and Lecturer at the Catholic University of East Africa.

Jane is aptly described as a community peace-builder and change agent. Over the years, she has served as a Chief Diversity Officer, implemented a human rights complaint system, launched pan-institutional initiatives to ensure employment equity and accessibility for persons with disabilities, and established the first-ever International Student Centre at the University of Toronto at Mississauga.  Jane’s rich academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education and a Master of Education in Theory and Policy Development from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.  She also holds a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.  Jane has published in The Canadian Journal for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and has presented at the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services.  She also currently serves as Treasurer of the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education. Since arriving at Sheridan and assuming oversight for the Centre for Equity and Inclusion, she has worked diligently to build positive relationships, embed equity in the Strategic Plan, establish an EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion) Council with broad representation from across our campuses, and build an organizational culture to support EDI.  She has also represented Sheridan as a sector leader in EDI at conferences, through her speaking engagements, and — most recently — as a Co-Investigator on a grant to fund EDI research.

Jane will continue to report directly to me and remains a respected member of the President/Vice Presidents team.  This change demonstrably cements Sheridan’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity.  Please join me in thanking Jane for assuming this intensified role.

Warmly,
Janet K. Morrison, PhD
President & Vice Chancellor

Farewell to Colleague and Friend June Cupido

big s formationIt is with very mixed emotions I share with you that June Cupido will be starting the next chapter of her life after almost 30 years of service at Sheridan.

June was first hired as the Coordinator of Student Development in January 1990. Her role in Student Services was focused on creating student leadership programs, most notably the Student Union Leadership Experience, Sheridan’s Peer Mentor Program and new student transition programs. By involving students in the process of finding a sense of personal and social direction, these initiatives helped to enhance the quality of student life on campus.

In 2001, June transferred to the OTR as the Manager of Student Recruitment and launched several student recruitment initiatives across Ontario and on campus to support enrolment, including the Ontario College Information Fair, Sheridan STARs (Student Admissions Representatives) leadership program, and the creation of Welcome Centres at each campus for Sheridan visitors. The STARs Program has focused on providing students with opportunities to build relationships and enhance confidence, while helping prospective students feel comfortable and welcome in the Sheridan community, providing insights about their program, the admissions process, and the Sheridan experience. Since the program’s inception, we’ve had more than a 1,000 of our students participate.

In 2005, June was appointed the Associate Registrar, Admissions and Student Recruitment. Her leadership in this role has been dedicated to developing and implementing Strategic Enrolment Management initiatives alongside her talented team and colleagues. Evolving the Contact Centre into a Client Service Centre, codifying the marketing and recruitment process, and fostering application growth in targeted segments have been key parts of her mandate in this role, along with promoting access, transparency and equity in Sheridan’s admissions policies.

Her proudest achievements have been helping students achieve their goals and contributing to the incredible enrolment growth we’ve experienced as an institution; during June’s tenure in the OTR,  Sheridan’s enrolment has grown from 12,000 to more than 22,000.

June’s last day will be August 30. To celebrate her very many contributions and wish her well in her next chapter, we will be having a celebration on Tuesday, August 27 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at the Welcome Centre (B101) Trafalgar Campus.

Sincerely,
Deanna McQuarrie
Registrar
