I am delighted to announce that Natalie Manrique will join Sheridan as the Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences/Continuing and Professional Studies on November 3.  Natalie comes with over 20 years of administrative experience, and most recently served as the Office Manager at Field Performance Group (FPG) where she supported the offices of the President and Vice-President.  As the Office Manager she developed and reviewed company policies for FPG, created and maintained an electronic filing system, and was the primary contact for corporate clients.  In addition, Natalie brings skills in programming in Visual Basic and developing SQL queries for databases.

Prior to her role as Office Manager, Natalie was at Siemens Canada, where she held the position of Bilingual Customer Service Representative, and Pro-Rep Marketing, where she was the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Office Manager. Her depth of expertise will serve as a great asset for both FHASS and FCAPS, as she supports the Office of the Dean in the two Faculties.  Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Natalie.

Sheridan’s 2014 United Way campaign is set to kick off on Monday, Nov. 17. This year, Sheridan has set an ambitious goal to raise $70,000 and we need your support to make this happen.

There are many ways to get involved during the campaign:

  • PLEDGING: You can make a one-time pledge or a payroll-deduction pledge online, or download and print out a paper pledge form. Please note that payroll deduction pledges made during last year’s campaign do not carry over to this year’s campaign. You will need to fill out a new payroll pledge. More details about pledging can be found here: https://www.sheridancollege.ca/unitedway.aspx
  • TOONIE TUESDAY: Bring your change and drop it off on campus to Toonie Tuesday United Way volunteers on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
  • SPAGHETTI LUNCHES: Take part in one of the Spaghetti Lunch events taking place during the week of Nov. 17 at each campus. A minimum donation of only $5 will get you a plate of spaghetti with vegetable or meat sauce, garlic bread, salad and a small drink. A big thanks to Chartwells for providing the delicious food for these events.
  • CINNAMON BUN BREAKFAST: Purchase a cinnamon bun and hot beverage on campus on Tuesday, Nov. 25 for a minimum donation of $3! Chef Kal is preparing a delicious cinnamon bun recipe for this event, which is co-sponsored by OPSEU Locals 244 and 245.
  • SILENT AUCTION: Participate in the Sheridan United Way Silent Auction starting on Friday, Nov. 21 and ending at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 26. There are many great prizes to be won this year including hockey tickets, culinary experiences and glass art.

We are looking for volunteers to help serve food at one of the lunch or breakfast events. Please email unitedway@sheridancollege.ca if you are able to donate an hour or two of your time.

All donations from all of Sheridan’s campaign events are in support of United Way and the important initiatives that the organization does to enrich the communities in which we live and work.

We look forward to seeing you at the events and working together to reach our campaign goal!

Thank you for your support.

Temporary Contemporary artwork installation at Trafalgar

temporary contemporary

Many of you may have noticed that Sheridan’s Trafalgar Campus is home to a new piece of public art. The installation is part of the Temporary Contemporary initiative and was created by artist Jon Sasaki.

In its third year, Temporary Contemporary is an opportunity to showcase the work of high-profile artists in the Sheridan community by animating public spaces on campus with engaging and creative design. “Sheridan’s students, faculty, and staff are able to connect with the broader art community and the artist’s work inspires unique opportunities for curriculum integration,” said Ronni Rosenberg, Dean of Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Art and Design.

A call for proposals went out earlier this year and artists submitted designs. A jury that included Sheridan staff and community members unanimously selected the work of the multidisciplinary artist to be featured on campus for one year. Sasaki’s art has been featured at numerous solo exhibitions including shows at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, the Dunlop Art Gallery, the Prairie Art Gallery, the MacLaren Art Centre and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Sasaki’s design features a digital clock, mounted above the main entrance of the campus. The practical fixture has a thought-provoking twist. “Unlike most campus clocks, this one will be set 24 hours fast, always displaying tomorrow’s time,” describes Sasaki. “Of course, tomorrow’s time is indistinguishable from today’s time and therein lies a small bit of levity that I hope will open up a range of interpretations.”

For the past year the work of Roula Partheniou entitled “Dopplekopf 2013” was featured in the Learning Commons at Sheridan. Her piece included mirrored objects in colour and shades of grey. Canadian Art Magazine featured her work and highlighted her installation at Sheridan.

To read more about Sasaki’s piece and to see a video of it being installed, visit the Sheridan Arts Blog.

This week you will notice holiday trees popping up around campus. However, they are not yet decorated as we’d like to get the Sheridan community involved this year. We thought we could set a goal of decorating (or completely covering) each tree with pairs of mittens for children and adults who are in need this holiday season.

We ask that when you are out doing your shopping, pick up a pair of mittens. Using the clothespins provided on the basket near each tree, hang your pair of mittens on the tree. When each tree is full, we will collect them and donate them to a local charity.

The trees can be found in the following locations:

Trafalgar – in front of the Security desk in the B-wing

Davis – Main entrance / Welcome Centre

HMC – Atrium across from the Welcome Desk

STC – Main entrance across from the Welcome Desk.
