The Language Training Team at FCAPS would like to congratulate Rahel Appiagyei, our Recruitment Specialist at Davis, on receiving the The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Rahel Appiagyei was chosen to receive this award for her community work as a young leader in the city of Toronto and the GTA, her establishment of the Chantel Dunn Memorial Scholarship at York University Foundations which has awarded its first $1200 to a York University student exhibiting leadership in the Black community, and most recently, for her role as a professor at Sheridan College in the Social Service Worker and Community Development Programs.  She was given the award this weekend by  The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.

“The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour  Her majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements of Canadians. The Chancellery of Honours, as part of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, administers the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal program. To be eligible for this honor, a person must: be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada…and have made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada…”

I am pleased to announce an organizational change within Advancement & External Relations, specifically within our Marketing & Brand Strategy department under the leadership of Director Dean Lorenz.

As we continue our journey to become Sheridan University, strategic marketing initiatives will become increasingly important. With this in mind, we have created two new roles to assist with strategic brand management, supporting institutional market positioning, student recruitment and stakeholder relations.

Creative Strategy

Jane Cockton who has been our Creative Services Manager for the past five years has been appointed to the position of Associate Director, Creative Strategy.

The Creative Services Manager position has been modified to capture the current and emergent needs of the department and is now titled Creative Studio Production Manager. As Jane works with clients to develop creative marketing strategies, the production manager will be hands-on within the creative studio, ensuring smooth project management.

Jane and her team will manage local and national advertising (print, broadcast, out-of-home and online/digital), co-ordinate and art direct photo shoots, and manage production of print publications and other branded assets such as trade show booths, displays, banners and promotional items.

Digital Marketing Strategy

Victoria Bomben who has been our Online Marketing Manager for the past two years has been appointed to the position of Associate Director, Digital Marketing Strategy.

The Online Marketing Manager position has also been modified to capture the current and emergent needs of the department and is now titled Digital Marketing Production Manager. As Victoria works with clients to develop digital strategies, the production manager will be hands-on within the digital marketing team, ensuring smooth project management.

Victoria and her team will manage digital media production (videos and multi-media), social media, our website’s content management system (CMS), information architecture, online branding, web analytics, search engine optimization and other digital initiatives.

The Creative Studio Production Manager and the Digital Marketing Production Manager positions will be posted soon.

This new management structure is aligned with our vision, and will strengthen our strategic marketing planning throughout our journey. Please join me in congratulating Jane and Victoria.

I am pleased to announce that Karla Gouthro will assume the position of First-Year Experience and Orientation Coordinator on April 8th, 2013.   As you may know, Dawn Sweeney, our current Coordinator of First Year Orientation and Transition, will start her maternity leave in May 2013.  Dawn’s hard work, diligence and energy will be hard to replicate. I am confident that the strong foundation for orientation and transition laid down by Dawn will allow us to continue to offer programming that supports and enhances student success at Sheridan.
Karla completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a Certificate in Adult Education at Dalhousie University in 2003. After working abroad in Seoul, Korea for one year, she returned to Canada to complete her Master of Education degree in Postsecondary Studies from Memorial University in 2006.  Her Master’s research focused on international education and international student services in higher education.

She spent this past year laying the foundational pieces for the First Year Transition Programs portfolio at Dalhousie University, piloting a series of Summer Orientation programs for all incoming students and implemented a series of on-going transition programs for students of marginalized backgrounds to support their academic and personal success.

Prior to Dalhousie, Karla spent six years at Queen’s University in a variety of roles working with both undergraduate and graduate students of all backgrounds.  Some of the roles she held at Queen’s were: International Education Intern, Coordinator of Community Outreach, Coordinator of Educational Programs in Residence Life, Coordinator of Graduate Student Life and Coordinator of Orientation and Transitions.

In addition to her work within the postsecondary environment, Karla spent two years as an integral member of the Kingston Pathways to Education Team.  Within this community service organization, Karla directly supported the educational endeavors of high school students at academic risk. In this role she had the opportunity to work with high school teachers, guidance counsellors, postsecondary administrators, non-profit organizations and of course with parents and students.
Please join me in welcoming Karla to Sheridan.

It is with great pleasure I introduce the new Manager of Accessible Learning, Matt Rempel.

Today, Monday, April 29, is Matt’s first day at Sheridan.

Matt comes to us from the Government of Ontario, where he was the Special Advisor to the Chief Officer for Diversity and Accessibility in the Ontario Public Service.

In that role, Matt provided expert advice to the Chief Officer and led a team of accessibility experts to develop strategies, organizational change initiatives, and learning and accessibility programs for the Ontario Public Service with the objective of becoming an accessible employer, policy maker, and service provider.

Matt brings with him 10 years experience in leadership roles, leading teams ranging in size from two to 35, as a business owner and manager, in a voluntary capacity as a Vice President of a non-profit career college, and as elected Vice Chair of Tomorrow’s Ontario Public Service (TOPS), an employee network in the OPS with over 4,000 members.  In addition, he worked for one year as a college instructor at Durham and has taken courses in adult learning and in educational programming for learners with disabilities.

Matt is a graduate of an Executive MBA program and earned an undergrad Economics degree from Queen’s University. He is passionate about innovative methods and emerging theories for learning that maximize the potential of technology and its role in the workplace.

He is eager to get started in his new role and begin building a career within post-secondary education. I think Matt will fit very well  into our ALS, Student Services and the collective Sheridan Team.

Welcome Matt!
