Staffing Announcement: Human Resources
It is with great pleasure that I announce the arrival of Jewel Amoah to the Centre for Respectful and Healthy Workplaces within the Human Resources Department at Sheridan. Jewel has joined our team in the role of Manager, Equity and Human Rights Services.

Luke Oko, Director of Food Services, has announced his retirement after 39 years of service. Reminder: Paul Toms’ Retirement Reception
It is with mixed feelings that I announce Paul Toms’ retirement on June 30 after a long and successful career at Sheridan. Please join the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology in celebrating Paul’s contributions to students in the Atrium by the Library at the Trafalgar campus on June 25, between 4 pm – 6 pm.
Paul has served at Sheridan for 22 years and has had countless leadership roles both in the School of Applied Computing and across the college. Early in his career here, Paul was instrumental in the development of the original Enterprise Database Management Graduate Certificate. He has been a tireless advocate of excellence in teaching and learning through his unique blend of wit and humour. Over time, Paul has held roles such as Program Coordinator, Academic Advisor, Peer Coach, Curriculum Coach, Student Orientation Presenter, and served on almost every committee or council known to Sheridan. Moreover, Paul has always been recognized for his love of music, soccer and warm friendship. Paul’s commitment to Sheridan is legendary, but behind his efforts lay his overarching dedication to our students’ success. His leadership and affable personality will be deeply missed. Please join our Faculty in wishing Paul well as he enters this new, and no doubt interesting, stage of his life.

A message from Mike Collins
As many of you know, I have retired from my position as Associate Vice President, Academic and Research at Sheridan College as of June 30, 2013. I am glad to go but I will miss you all. Many of you contributed directly to whatever success I have enjoyed and I owe you many thanks for that support. Others have kept the institution on which I depended functioning and for that I am also grateful.
I was a faculty member for many years teaching writing in the School of English and Media Studies and then, for a second act, I taught drawing and painting in the School of Animation, Arts and Design. I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity I had to work with so many dedicated students.
Many of you I first knew as Dean of Animation, Arts and Design at Sheridan where I focused on developing new Baccalaureate degrees in Sheridan’s Art programs, among them Animation. I was also privileged to come along at a time when Sheridan had capital grants for building Arts program space. Developing new programs and new space at the same time is a lot of fun I discovered. Recently I have enjoyed helping to build Sheridan’s research infrastructure, both academically and institutionally.
My interest in the Arts continues unabated as a creator and researcher as well as educator. Perhaps our paths shall cross in the future in one of those areas.
Again, thank you for your support and best wishes.
Mike Collins

On Monday, flags will be lowered to half-staff at Sheridan, in memory of Linda.

On Boarding for New Employees
The on boarding process is an important element in the recruitment and retention of new employees. It is the process of introducing new employees to the College, their managers and coworkers, their jobs and the organizational culture.
In an effort to ensure a timely, consistent and successful on boarding process, Human Resources & Organizational Development would like to remind you of the online New Employee Welcome Package available to all employees. This can be found on the Human Resources webpage (About Sheridan – Faculty and Staff – Human Resources – Learning and Development – New Employee Welcome Package).
To help managers prepare for their new employees as well as help to acclimatize them to Sheridan a Manager’s Toolkit can be found on the Human Resources Intranet webpage (AccessSheridan – Human Resources – Learning and Development – New Employee Orientation) and includes the following checklists:
We strongly encourage managers to implement this onboarding process with all new hires.
If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact your Human Resources Portfolio Manager

Take Your Grade 9 Kids to Work Day
“Take Your Kids to Work” day is an annual, nationwide program that helps Grade 9 students understand the importance of staying in school. The hope is that these young people will develop an appreciation for their parents’ careers, start exploring career options and gain a better understanding of just how many career choices are open to them. The goal of this program is to give insight into the importance of schools and businesses to promote and support continuous learning and successful transitions into the working world for young people.
Sheridan is proud to be involved in an exciting career exploration activity for our employees’ grade 9 children. In the spirit of providing an environment that encourages and stimulates creativity and learning, Human Resources & Organizational Development is pleased to announce that a planning committee has been put together to plan a structured program for “Take Your Kids to Work Day” on Wednesday November 6, 2013. This is the perfect opportunity for Sheridan to highlight the range of positions and careers that are available within our own institution but also help to develop an appreciation of a parent’s career.
If you are an employee with a child entering grade 9 this September and you plan to take your child to work with you on November 6, 2013, we are asking for your input so the planning committee can make this day a success. Could you please take a few moments of your time along with your child to complete this brief survey by end of day Monday, September 16, 2013. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/interestin_takeyourkidstowork
Your input will be instrumental in helping the committee determine best choices for topics on the day. More details will be announced later in September once the planning committee has had an opportunity to review these survey results and design a day that will spark your child’s interest and participation.
